From a Poor Boy to an Industry Leader
Today, many people know Terry Chong as a successful entrepreneur who leads a company with seven factories, more than 10,000 completed projects, and numerous prestigious business awards. However, few know the journey behind his success—a story of poverty, debt, perseverance, and transformation.

A Childhood Shaped by Hardship
Terry was born into a humble family and grew up facing financial difficulties. As a child, he witnessed debt collectors coming after his parents and experienced periods when even basic meals were a struggle. Yet instead of allowing hardship to define him, it ignited a determination deep within him.

At the age of 12, Terry began working while studying. He took on various jobs and even experienced being underpaid and mistreated, earning as little as RM1 a day. These experiences taught him early in life that there are no shortcuts to success — only hard work, perseverance, and self-reliance can create a better future.
The First Entrepreneurial Challenge
At 27, Terry made a bold decision alongside his father to start a small metal fabrication factory with only two foreign workers. He had no business management experience and no entrepreneurial background — driven by passion, he stepped into the world of business, only to discover that entrepreneurship was far more challenging than he had imagined.

Without proper systems, management knowledge, or financial planning, the company soon fell into severe financial difficulties. The business was placed under AKPK financial restructuring and came dangerously close to bankruptcy. In 2014, to fulfill commitments made to customers, Terry sold the newly purchased house he had just moved into. He lost his house — but he did not lose his integrity.
Awakening Through Failure
After experiencing setbacks and failures, Terry began to reflect deeply. He realized that the biggest challenge facing his company was not market competition — it was his own limitations as a leader. The business could not grow beyond the capacity of its founder. That realization became the beginning of his transformation.
The Learning That Changed Everything
The year 2017 became one of the most significant turning points in Terry's life. Although the company's finances were still under pressure, he made a courageous decision to invest in himself by enrolling in OE Business School. Under the mentorship of Dato Wira Calvin Khiu, Terry learned modern business management, leadership principles, and the Three-Win Business Model.

He began building systems, developing teams, strengthening branding, establishing corporate culture, and shifting the company from a business dependent on its owner to one driven by systems and structure. From that moment, the trajectory of the company changed forever.
Redefining the Awning Industry
Many people viewed the awning industry as a traditional trade with limited growth potential. Terry saw it differently. Driven by the belief that there is no such thing as a traditional industry — only traditional thinking — he continuously pushed for innovation and industry transformation.

His vision was to elevate awnings beyond simple shelter solutions and position them as lifestyle products that integrate design, aesthetics, technology, and modern living. From product innovation and installation standards to branding and customer experience, he led the company through a complete transformation and successfully pioneered the modernization of the awning industry.
